These are the spray tan safe lotion now i will discuss how you can maximize life of your spray tan through these moisturizers, what ingredients you should use and my top tips to make your spray tan last longer.
Maximize Your Spray Tan Lifespan
Moisturizing properly after a spray tan can help to last your tan longer and makes skin healthy and looks fresh. One thing you should keep in mind is that moisturizing after a spray tan is a little different then your normal routine. I experimented with a few different aftercare routines, and I finally feel like I’ve figured out what really works.
When should you moisturize after a spray tan?
As the tanning solution takes time to fully develop so you should have to wait at least 8 to 24 hours after your spray tan. Moisturizing too soon can cause streaking and uneven “zebra-like” tan.

After taking your first shower you can start moisturizing, to keep the skin hydrated and the tan looks fresh. From 3 days onward it is recommended to moisturize twice a day and the best time to do so is right after a shower.
Avoid hot showers
Better to use cold or lukewarm water every time you take a bath after spray tanning. Warm water can cause stripping to your tan. Also avoid using shaving and chemical exfoliants this time round–they will break your tan and cause patchiness. Exfoliating, moisturizing, and shaving at least 1 day before spray tan will give you the best hydrating skin ever.
Post-Tan Skincare: What Not to Use
You need to avoid specific ingredients if you want your spray tan to last long, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Scrubs
It is recommended not to use scrub after your spray tan. Because scrubbing can cause you tan to come off faster and might even leave patchy spots. Scrubbing removes the top layer of your skin and that’s where the tan sits. So when you scrub, you are scrubbing the tan away too.
The only time I might use a scrub is if the part of my tan is already fading otherwise, it’s best to just leave your skin alone or just moisturize.
Essential oils
I often don’t recommend essential oil to anyone, especially for the face. As it can cause allergy and may irritate your skin. Although they are natural but are very reactive, so it’s better to avoid them after a tan spray
Bar soaps
Due to their high pH, Bar Soaps can mess with your skin’s natural barrier and cause your tan to fade faster. They can be really drying and often strip the skin off its natural oils–-which you definitely don’t want when you are trying to keep your skin hydrated and your tan looking fresh.
Chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid
People with body acne might use shower gel that contains salicylic acid or glycolic acid. They work best for sensitive skin but not a good option for keeping your spray tan.
Hyaluronic acid is totally fine and has no effect on your tan if used before spray tan. It’s better to avoid exfoliating ingredients after your spray tan.
Best Hydrating Ingredients for Post-Spray Tan Skin
The best moisturizer after spray tan for your first shower is the one which is thick, rich, and helps lock in moisture.
Ingredients to maintain your spray tan are
- Shea butter
- Gryslien
- Hyaluronic acid
- Coconut oil
- Vitamine E
- Coconut butter
- Aloe-vera
A Lot of these ingredients are the ones which I do not recommend to use on your face. If you have dry skin it is recommended to use moisturizer once a week to help your tan last longer and fade evenly.
My top tips for making a spray tan last
Loose-fitting clothing
Wearing the loss-fitting clothes to your appointment is a must–tight clothes can rub off your tan , leaving unwanted lines.
- Don’t wear a bra or undies right after your tan.
- Comfy T shirt dress are prefect
The day of your spray tan
You must keep your schedule clear on the day of your tan. In my experience, it helps to have a day of doing nothing. Also avoid flying anywhere on the same day as it ruins your tan.
Shaving or waxing
From my side it’s not recommended to shave on the same day as it may cause hair follicles more noticeable when the tan goes on them. It’s better to shave or moisturize a day before your spray tan.
